Dr Hugh Herzig

This post is based at STEPs Specialist Eating Disorder Service, at Southmead Hospital, North Bristol.  This is a tertiary service covering the Avon area, within AWP Trust.  It provides excellent experience in the management of eating disorders.  We are a tertiary service, commissioned to take referrals from secondary Mental health Services across Avon, and offering assessment and a range of interventions to patients with clinical eating disorders who reside within Avon.   Epidemiological evidence suggests that in the Avon population of 1 million we would expect to find several thousand people meeting diagnostic criteria for bulimia nervosa, two or three hundred for anorexia nervosa, and several thousand more with other significant clinical eating disorders (ED-NOS).  In addition to direct clinical work, the team offer supervision to staff working with eating disordered patients in other mental health teams across the Trust.

Our service offers a range of interventions: in-patient Eating Disorder Unit, Day Therapy Programme, individual time limited psycho-therapeutic work, out-patient groups, and also less intensive out-patient follow up for our more chronic caseload, often with colleagues from primary or secondary care.   The team offers in reach into medical wards to arrange and support medical admissions of critical ill anorexic patients, and also offers specialist assessments and care planning to patients from outside Avon.

The post holder will build on existing psychotherapeutic skills while working with this difficult to treat client group. In particular there is the opportunity to work with groups and to use motivational approaches.   (Updated 24.01.13)
