Welcome to the Severn School of Psychiatry General Adult Training Scheme.

General Psychiatry training in Severn offers a broad range of training opportunities across 3 NHS trusts;  Gloucester Health & Care, Avon & Wiltshire Partnership, and Somerset Foundation Trust.

Trainees are encouraged/expected to gain experience in at least 2 trusts during the course of their training.  Different trusts offer different opportunities, although all can support trainees to fulfil the requirements of the Royal College of Psychiatrists’ curriculum.  Please see the GA job descriptions list for the full range of training available.  Academic training posts in psychiatry are available within the training scheme, in conjunction with the University of Bristol.

As per GMC guidance, CCT endorsements can be achieved in the subspecialties of Liaison Psychiatry, Rehabilitation and Addictions; these are achieved through meeting the subspecialty curriculum requirements, demonstrated at ARCP & achieved by spending a minimum of 12 months’ FTE in a relevant training post.

Most trainees rotate post in August each year.  Each Spring, there is a choices exercise, where trainees can preference their top 5 choices.   Occasionally certain posts are in high demand, in which case a competitive process is held to determine the allocation of over-subscribed posts.

Please contact the TPD, Dr Claire Taylor, if you have any questions about the scheme.
