Services in Bristol

Community health services for adults with Psychiatry of Intellectual Disability living in Bristol and surrounding areas are currently provided by three Social Enterprise organisations and delivered through Community Learning Difficulties Teams. Some of the CLDTs are integrated health and social service teams. The forensic team and most of the psychiatrists are all the responsibility of Avon and Wiltshire Mental Health Partnership Trust (one is employed directly by Sirona Care and Health). All the long-stay hospitals in this area have now closed and the service is entirely community based.

The CLDTs serve the adult population. Children with Psychiatry of Intellectual Disability are covered by children’s services (including the Bristol and South Gloucestershire Child/ID Psychiatric Service) and the CLDTs, including medical staff, link with these teams to discuss children in transition to the adult services.

In each geographical area the CLDT has its own Intensive Support Team for specialist outreach, mainly staffed by nurses. There are close links with mainstream mental health crisis teams and where possible in-patient assessment takes place on wards for adults of working age and for older adults.
The Avon Forensic Community Psychiatry of Intellectual Disability Team is based at Petherton Resource Centre, Hengrove.
Clients are able to use services across boundaries where appropriate. Due to its size, reputation and approach to therapy, the service has been able to recruit a wide range of clinicians and teams are made up of community nurses, occupational therapists, physiotherapists, psychologists and speech and language therapists, as well as creative therapists (drama, art and music). All specialty trainees are expected to relate to these other professionals where appropriate in designing and monitoring assessments and therapy for clients.

There is a specific on-call ID service provided by consultants and ST4-6 trainees.
