All trainees occupying a training post are required to undertake an annual assessment of their progress.  This is known as the Annual Review of Competence Progression (ARCP).

The ARCP is carried out by a small specialty-based panel with a composition as recommended by the Gold Guide. There are two stages to the ARCP process; firstly the panel will review the documentation presented by the trainee to assess the progress in training of a defined period (normally the previous year) and recommend an outcome based on the evidence provided. Secondly, the panel then meet with the trainee to inform them of the outcome recommended and facilitate a discussion on training to date and identify any specific training requirements. Both stages of the ARCP are now held on the same day where possible.

The majority of trainees will have their ARCP in the Summer of each year, with a small number of ARCPs taking place in December. Caroline Stitfall will be in contact with you when your ARCP is due with the date this is scheduled to take place and the requirements of your assessment.

ARCP Requirements

You will need to prepare documentation to inform the ARCP process.  These requirements are outlined below for the separate training groups.  Ensure you meet with your educational supervisor/TPD/College Tutor, as appropriate, well in advance to finalise documentation ahead of your ARCP.

  • Up to date CV
  • Form R - remember to also complete a Wider Scope of Practice Form if you undertake any work outside of your training in your capacity as registered medical practitioner which you do not have an appraisal for.
  • The above documentation should be uploaded to your ePortfolio under the "evidence" section with an appropriate title in the summary field so that the forms can be located efficiently by the ARCP panel.
