Dr Andrew Clark, Consultant Psychotherapist is the 'Speciality Tutor' for Psychotherapy and hold an overview for all core trainees across Severn. Here is some information about psychotherapy training requirements for core trainees based in Severn Postgraduate Medical Education. Please feel free to contact me if you have any questions about this (Andrew Clark, Consultant Psychiatrist in Psychotherapy, tel: 0117 3784480).

  • Attainment of psychotherapy competencies will be reviewed at your annual ARCP. You are expected to attend a weekly or fortnightly case discussion (Balint) group. Your facilitator will need to complete a minimum of two Case Based Discussion (CBD) assessments during this time – for special CBD tool to be used for case discussion groups see Psychotherapy Assessments on College website
These assessments can now be done on-line through the College website.
  • You are also expected to see a minimum of two psychotherapy cases in two different models of therapy during your core training. For each case, your supervisor should complete two SAPEs (Structured Assessment of Psychotherapy Expertise) for you to file in your portfolio. One should be completed during therapy and the other at the end. The SAPE tool is available on the College website under Psychotherapy Assessments on the link shown above and is also now available to complete on-line.
  • One of your Psychotherapy cases needs to be presented to an assessor as a Psychotherapy ACE. There is a specially devised assessment tool for this on the College website under Psychotherapy Assessments. The assessor should be either a Consultant Psychiatrist in Psychotherapy, a Consultant Psychiatrist who has some interest in Psychological Therapies or another professional with specialist skills in psychological therapies and experience in assessing psychiatry trainees. The assessor can be the supervisor but in some instances it may be preferable for the assessor to be someone other than the supervisor. Again this assessment can now be completed on-line.
  • Available supervision opportunities are listed in table below. All supervisors have a limit to capacity so you would need to discuss with the relevant supervisor whether there is a vacancy. Supervision opportunities for CBT and family therapy are sometimes available in CAMHS placements. Please discuss with your CAMHS educational supervisor or Tutor at the earliest opportunity.
  • Attendance at supervision group needs to be regular and the time needs to be protected from routine clinical demands. If there are any problems with this you need to discuss this with your local Tutor.

Andrew Clark, Psychotherapy Consultant

If you are looking to carry out a specific type of psychotherapy and seeking out supervision groups (and patients) you can contact individual tutors that carry out a specific therapy if it not carried out locally.
