If you are a Foundation Year 1 or Year 2 doctor who is interested in applying for Psychiatry, we would like to encourage you to spend 2-5 days within Psychiatry to learn about what the job and training entails.
Taster days in Severn Postgraduate Medical Education (PGME) are led by core trainees in Psychiatry. We aim to cover as much of the geographical area of Severn PGME as we can, with opportunities for foundation doctors to shadow Consultants, trainees and our teams for 2-5 days.
As foundation doctors you have up to 5 days available to take as taster days in subjects you are thinking of applying to for further training if you are unable to do psychiatry as part of your foundation training or if your rotation in psychiatry would be after the application process. We intend for our taster days to be arranged to give you an idea of what work you can expect to do as a junior psychiatrist, as well as speak to a trainee about the training available and discuss sub-specialities within psychiatry and career development.
We aim to tailor your taster days depending on your individual interests, to include a selection of the following:
- Ward rounds and ward work and 1:1 time with a core trainee
- Time with the multidisciplinary team to include senior psychiatrists and community psychiatric nurses
- Outpatients work and community visits
- Experience of specialities within psychiatry eg Child and Adolescent Psychiatry, Eating Disorders, Liaison Psychiatry, Learning Disabilities, Forensics, Old Age Psychiatry.
If you would like to arrange a taster day or for more information, please complete the form below and send it to the Severn PGME Trainee Recruitment Rep, Amy Manley ST4 in Psychiatry.
