Severn Postgraduate Medical Education Psychiatry Core Training Course

The Severn Core Psychiatry Course is designed to:

  • To significantly reduce costs and release remaining study leave funding to core trainees
  • To revise and improve the current course structure to meet the needs of the trainees
  • Improve trainees' performance at the MRCPsych exams
  • Help trainees develop even better standards of clinical practice

The structure of the Core Psychiatry Course has been adapted to best serve trainees as they progress through their core training. We have worked with trainee representatives to ensure that different learning styles are accommodated.

The course timetable is designed to fit with the exam timetable, so trainees are well prepared for each paper and the CASC exam. The course runs over 3 years: each year builds on the skills and knowledge already acquired. Most teaching is done in modular blocks. Advanced Communication Skills training is an important element which runs throughout the first two years of the course, with a morning session relevant to the particular module.
